Apsara Khmer ballet in exile

Directed by Jacques Kébadian, 1988, 98 min, French version

Apsara, which is the name of a goddess, is also the name that the prima ballerina of the Khmer Ballet gave themselves. Created in 1914 by the Queen Sisowath Kossamak, this type of dance has been forgotten during the war and the Khmer Rouge regime. In 1980, survivors from the Ballet, who were refugees in France and in the Camp of Site B at the Khmer-Thai border, revived Apsara dance. This document shows this revival, from refugee camp to France and from training to performance.
