“Heavently Maidens” Dance Again
Directed by Jean-Louis Berdot, 53min, 1994, Khmer version
It is in the temples of Angkor Wat where the Apsara dances were born. This classical dance is part of Cambodia’s identity. Under the Khmer Rouge, 90% of the artists of the classical scene disappeared and their knowledge was gone with them. Devoting her life to reconstitute Champa Meas Tes, one of the Apsara dance, Madame Em Theay is one of the last depositaries of this tradition of centuries.
