Rice People

Directed by Rithy Panh, 1994, 120min, Khmer version with English subtitles

The story of a peasant family whose lives depend on growing rice. The film follows the rhythm of nature and focuses on the poor family of Vong Poeuv (the husband) and Yim Om (the wife) who struggle to survive with their seven children. Rice cultivation animates their lives, their joys, their beliefs, their survival…the balance is fragile for this large family with a small piece of land, and at the same time, the children grow up very fast. A trivial incident occurs and the life cycle becomes a cycle of death.
