The Evolutions of Khmer Scripts

Lectured by Mr. Hun Chhunteng, teacher of linguistics

The idea of the 10 evolutions of Khmer scripts in the “Grammar of the Khmer language” book of Georges Maspero, published in 1915, has spread among scholars in Cambodia. He spent 20 years compiling the book and stated the Khmer script models in nine inscriptions, while the number of founded inscriptions still remains small. To date, the number of listed inscriptions has increased to over 1,400. This lecture will discuss whether the Khmer scripts actually evolved 10 times? What are the criteria for the development of Khmer script? Also, the lecture will display Khmer scripts based on evidence of ancient writings, especially inscriptions.
