Opening May 19 at 6:30 at Bophana Center / Free entrance
In conjunction with the exhibit, the artist will give a lecture to young and emerging Cambodian artists. This project is sponsored by the Visual Arts Initiative of the U.S. State Department Bureau of Education and Culture to promote mutual understanding – encourage new art forms in Cambodia, encourage women in the arts. In addition, this project is to follow up the You Khin Memorial Women’s Art Prize that post sponsored in 2010.

THIS EXHIBITION PRESENTS 21 DRAWINGS IN THREE
DIFFERENT SERIES:
Incognito: The Incognito series presents Cambodian women under an attractive, rich and complex aspect. All the protection clothes create unrecognizable individuals. This anonymity gives a feeling of freedom in the city. Incognito depicts the Asian woman differently than an exotic and submitted object.
Paradox: In Today's complex world, finding oneself is harder than ever. Pressure are higher on young women to be at the same modern among their friends and traditional for their relatives. These are portraits of today's Cambodian girls torn between tradition and modernity.
Togetherness: There is no curve more beautiful in nature than the curve of a pregnant woman. The intense ink strokes contrast with the peaceful moment that she experiences with her baby. A praise to reflective moment in life!
Biography: Saphan was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 1975. Fleeing the Khmer Rouge regime, Saphan took residence for over two decades in Canada and France. Saphan's passion for art and her love of Khmer culture has made her one of the most prominent and encouraging voices in the Cambodian art scene. Today she is living and working in Greenwich Village, USA.
