The Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center celebrates the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

World Day for Audiovisual HeritageOn Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center will arrange an open house for the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage organized by Unesco. This event aims at increasing awareness among the Cambodian public, about the challenges to be met in preserving audiovisual heritage.

Whatever their formats are, audiovisual recordings are vulnerable. A notable part of the twentieth century audiovisual archives has already disappeared and some others are threatened by natural or technological deterioration or by the absence of appropriate safeguards.

The Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center located in Phnom Penh collects and safeguards audiovisual archives about Cambodia and allows visitors to consult them. Thus, its activities fit into the process that Unesco has been promoting since October 27, 1980 when the “Recommendations for the safeguarding and preservation of moving images” was adopted. It was the first international text that proclaimed the cultural and historical importance of film and TV archives.

The entire Center’s staff will welcome visitors, starting from 11 a.m., to explain the collecting, safeguarding and digitalizing of audiovisual documents. Some visits will be organized in the Center and demonstrations will be held in the consultation area. Some films created by Cambodian associations will be screened nonstop; from 4 p.m. these associations will explain why they entrusted their audiovisual productions to the Bophana Center. The day will end with an evening screening on the big screen of documentary films about Cambodia starting from 6.30 p.m.

This initiative will continue with the Documentary Film Festival that will be held between October 30 and November 3, 2007 at the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center [1].
