Creation Workshop “Vann Nath - Sera” at the Bophana Center
Memory, Archives and Creation - volet 2
From June 16 to July 12, 2008, the painters Vann Nath and Sera work with young students and artists on the completion of new work, using audiovisual archives of the database of the Bophana Center that relate to Khmer history and culture, such as documentary films, TV and radio programs, as well as the photographs of Taizo Ichinose, a Japanese who sojourned in Cambodia and Vietnam in 1972 and 1973 before being arrested and put to death by the Khmer Rouge. A return to these documents will restore the power of their testimony. For this reason, various phases of creation are suggested: in the first phase, audiovisual archives are explored and identified, next, in the second phase, they will be reappropriated using the plastic arts-drawing, painting, etc. Before a individual creation is undertaken. A group of fifteen people accompanied by a Khmer/French interpreter will be formed. The paintings and drawing produced by the workshop participants will be presented in April, 2009 at the Bophana Center and in February, 2010 in France. Visits and cultural activities will be organized during the exhibitions.
