Documentaries: Elephant conservation in indigenous communities in Cambodia – Online

Directed by 12 young filmmakers, 2020, 54min, Bunong and Khmer version with English subtitles

On June 5, 2021, which is the World Environment Day, Bophana Center is honored to present a special online screening program to celebrate this meaningful day.

1. My Home
Directed by Sopheana Choun, Choulay Mech, Sopheak Yam, Sochetra Mean, Pisen Chhean, 2020, 28mn, Bunong and Khmer version with English subtitles
Chheol Thouk never wanted to be anything else but a mahout and he roams the forest tending to his elephants. But the natural habitat in Mondulkiri province shrinking due to deforestation — threatening the elephants, their ecosystem and Chheol’s way of life.

2. Dull Trail
Directed by Raksa Khon, Mono Peou, Rickydavid Choey, 2020, 11mn, Bunong and Khmer version with English subtitles
Blind in one eye and traumatized from years of war and American bombs, Mae Neng the elephant learns to accept the love of her kind caretaker Da Chroed in Mondulkiri province.

3. Memories
Directed by PAOV Theang, SAT Sreytoch, SOUS Sonan, 2020, 14mn, Bunong and Khmer version with English subtitles
As a matriarch in Mondulkiri province, Preng Chanthy strives to maintain the traditions of her indigenous community – including caring for the local elephants and brewing rice wine to offer to spirits – while passing her wisdom on to the next generation.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion between filmmakers, representatives of donors, and collaborators of the project « Elephant conservation and indigenous experiences in Cambodia ». With the support of Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project involves a collaboration between the University of Bath, Queen’s University Belfast, The University of Leeds, Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, and Elephant Livelihood Initiative Environment (ELIE).
