M-13 The birthplace of the Khmer rouge’s brutality
Directed by Roeun Narith, 2024, 38 minutes, Khmer version with English subtitle
M-13 was a Khmer Rouge detention, interrogation, and torture center in Teuk Phos district, Kampong Chhnang province, near the border with Kampong Speu. Originally the Northern Special Region’s detention site from 1971, its activities slowed in early April 1975 as the Khmer Rouge prepared to seize Phnom Penh. By April 17, the center was dismantled.
During the civil war, the prison held, interrogated, and tortured people from areas controlled by the Lon Nol government. Hundreds of detainees died there. Kaing Guek Eav (Duch) gained his early experience in prison management, torture, and execution at M-13 before applying these methods even more brutally at S-21.
