Kampuchea 1981
Produced by Jean DeSpiegeleer, 1981, 38minutes, French version Enlish subtitle
Filmed during Red Cross missions across Phnom Penh and rural Cambodia, the reels document ordinary Cambodians continuing with daily life in a country recovering from genocide. People stare curiously at the foreign cameraman and his unfamiliar equipment, eye-locked then smile into the camera. It depicts curious gazes turning into smiles, which is a typical reflection of Cambodian warmth and resilience, despite the recent trauma they had just endured.
The footages capture street life in Phnom Penh, from bicycles and cyclos moving through damaged roads to roadside vendors, repair shops, and food stalls. Landmarks that define the face of Phnom Penh including the Royal Palace, Wat Ounalom, Olympic Stadium, Central Market, and the Royal Railway Station appear throughout the reels, with visible traces of war lingering in the background of a city marked by isolation and recovery. Beyond the capital, the reels show flooded villages, improvised river crossings ferry, rice farming, clay pot making, and communities rebuilding their livelihoods.
