S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine
Directed by Rithy Panh, 2002, 100 minutes, Khmer version with English subtitles
In S21, Rithy Panh brings together survivors and former members of the Khmer Rouge at the notorious Tuol Sleng prison (code-named S21),
now a genocide museum in Phnom Penh.
The film captures powerful confrontations between those who survived and those who once served as guards and executioners. Painter Vann Nath returns to the former school-turned-prison where he was tortured, confronting his past and his former captors. He is one of the few who survived, while more than 17,000 men, women, and children perished at S21.
