Repurposing Phnom Penh : Built Forms and Infrastructure as Archive

“Repurposing Phnom Penh” is an upcoming workshop organised by the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) in partnership with the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) and the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center. The workshop will explore Phnom Penh’s history from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s through multiple lenses to examine how war, regime change, and transition have shaped and been shaped by Phnom Penh’s urban environment. Participating students will study and collect materials at various archival institutions and develop group projects in order to create a social and physical representation of Phnom Penh over four decades. At the conclusion of the workshop, they will present the results of their research utilizing selected archival artifacts from the Bophana Center. The discussants for the workshop will be Roeun Virak (architect and lecturer at Norton University and CamTech) and Moeng Meta (independent curator). The workshop is facilitated by co-instructors Stéphanie Benzaquen-Gautier (historian), Khvay Samnang (artist), Anne-Laure Porée (anthropologist) and Vuth Lyno (artist).
