In Defense of the Homeland: Bunong Soldiers in the Khmer Republic (1970–1975)

presented by Ms. Catherine Scheer

Little is known about Cambodia’s highland minorities during the late 1960s and early 1970s, when their homelands were afflicted by the Khmer Rouge and the spillover of the war in Vietnam, notably the American bombings. Stories heard in Mondulkiri bring forth the journeys of Bunong men who were flown to Phnom Penh with their families to join the Khmer Republic’s Army.

This talk will draw on narratives of the few Bunong who survived the mission and the more numerous ones who lost relatives to it. It sheds light on these Cambodian highlanders’ previously unmentioned military involvement.
