Bophana Center to Celebrate World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on October 27th, 2024
Phnom Penh, October 25, 2024 – Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center will join the global community in celebrating World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on October 27th, 2024. This important day, designated by UNESCO, aims to raise awareness about the significance of preserving audiovisual materials for future generations. As part of the commemoration, Bophana Center invites individuals, institutions, and the general public across Cambodia to reflect on the value of their own audiovisual collections, which may be stored in homes, offices, or warehouses.
Audiovisual materials such as film reels, audio and video cassettes, vinyl records, reel-to-reel tapes, and photographs hold a wealth of historical and cultural significance. These materials, however, are highly vulnerable to decay if not properly preserved. As part of its mission, Bophana Center encourages everyone to pay attention to the condition of these invaluable assets. Whether in good or fragile condition, audiovisual materials can provide a window into Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and its modern history.
To support preservation efforts, Bophana Center offers expert advice on how to properly store or digitize these materials before they deteriorate beyond recovery. By providing guidance on best practices for safeguarding these collections, the Center hopes to help Cambodians protect and share their unique histories and stories with future generations.
Mr. CHEA Sopheap, Executive Director of Bophana Center, expressed the importance of this initiative: “Our cultural heritage is embedded in these audiovisual materials, and each piece is a part of our collective memory. It is our responsibility to ensure that these memories are preserved for future generations to access and learn from. On this World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, we want to encourage everyone in Cambodia to take action and save their audiovisual treasures before they are lost.”
Bophana Center is committed to offering preservation solutions to individuals and organizations, from storage advice to digitization services, ensuring that the content stored within these materials is accessible for years to come.
