Welcome to Cambodia: From War Zone to Tourist Destination

Neither journalist nor photographer, Paul Cummings was postwar Cambodia’s first tourist and was able to document various rare aspects of Cambodia after a brutal war and a bloody revolution.

Heading a pioneering tour company, he led the first tourist group to visit Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat after the fall of the Khmer Rouge and made many private visits to the country to survey tourist areas commencing in 1983.

“Welcome to Cambodia: From War Zone to Tourist Destination” is a selection of the hundreds of images he took of Cambodia at that time, and will form a permanent part of Bophana Center’s website.

Founded by film director Rithy Panh, Bophana Center collects every archive images and sounds on Cambodia, and it offers free public access to this unique heritage. Bophana Center also trains young Cambodians for careers in filmmaking, broadcasting and new media. The goal is to open their mind to artistic creation and foster a personal cultural production.

ARPAA has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and ARPAA, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority and discrimination. ARPAA also adheres to strict child safeguarding principles.
